A Mysterious Birth: Still Unknown to the World

Shri Sai Baba is believed to have been born in the year 1835 to a Brahmin couple in Pathri, a town that was then part of the Nizam state. According to what Baba revealed in his final days, his parents handed him over to a fakir when he was just five years old.

To this day, no one knows the exact date or place of Baba’s birth. Many communities claim that he belonged to their caste or sect, but none of these claims have ever been proven.

First Arrival in Shirdi – Shirdi Sai Baba Story

Sai Baba arrived in the village of Shirdi in Maharashtra when he was only 16 years old. Villagers were astonished to see a young boy sitting in deep meditation under a neem tree, without food or water for several days.

Bayajabai, the wife of the village chief, began to check on the boy’s well-being. Eventually, she started bringing him food regularly. Baba began treating her like a mother, and a quiet bond of love formed between them.

The Secret Beneath the Neem Tree

One day, Baba pointed to the neem tree and told the villagers to dig beneath it. As they did, they uncovered a stone slab, oil lamps glowing without oil or air, and a cow-mouth-shaped vessel on a wooden table — all defying natural logic.

Baba then revealed, “This is the sacred place where my Guru performed penance.”
He instructed people to worship the tree, not him, and asked that the place be left untouched.

Even today, this sacred neem tree is the first stop for pilgrims arriving in Shirdi.

Sai Baba was an unusual figure. He lived alone, spoke very little, and appeared fearless. Some people misunderstood him and even threw stones at him.

He initially stayed in Shirdi for about three years. Then, for one year, he disappeared. During that time, it’s believed he traveled widely, met saints and fakirs, and even worked briefly as a weaver.

Dwarkamai and the Sacred Fire

In 1858, Baba returned to Shirdi permanently. He spent the early years under the neem tree, and later moved into an abandoned mosque, which came to be known as Dwarkamai.

There, he maintained a sacred fire called Dhuni, from which he would give Udi (holy ash) to devotees. People believed this ash had the power to heal all kinds of physical and spiritual ailments.

A Simple Life Full of Devotion

Sai Baba lived a very simple life. He loved to cook and would share the food as Prasad with everyone who visited. His days were filled with singing devotional songs, dancing, and quietly blessing those in need.

He celebrated all religious festivals — whether Hindu, Muslim, or otherwise — and welcomed people from all faiths.

Sai Baba’s Spiritual Philosophy – Unity in Diversity

Sai Baba was against religious orthodoxy. He respected all religions and taught his followers to:

• Chant God’s name regularly
• Read their own holy scriptures
• Live a simple and honest life

He allowed Muslims to perform Namaz and recite the Quran during festivals, while he also followed Hindu rituals himself.

He never claimed to be God but lived in a way that made people see God in him.

2. Water Turned into Oil

3. Finding Chand Bhai’s Lost Horse

Chand Bhai had lost his horse and searched for miles. A fakir (Sai Baba) told him to check near a stream. To his surprise, the horse was there! This incident led to Sai Baba arriving in Shirdi during a marriage procession, where he was lovingly called “Sai” for the first time.

4. Stopping Heavy Rain

When a devotee, Rao Bahadur, and his wife were about to leave Shirdi, it started raining heavily. Baba prayed to Allah to stop the storm, and the rain immediately slowed down, allowing the couple to travel safely.

5. Godavari River Flowing from Baba’s Feet

Devotee Das Ganu wanted to visit the Godavari River. Baba told him the holy river flows from his feet. When Das Ganu touched Baba’s feet, water miraculously flowed from them. He accepted it as sacred Tirtha and shared it with others.

A child once fell into a stream and was drowning. Baba, miles away, shouted, “Stop!” and the water froze. The child was saved, showing Baba’s divine reach and love for his devotees.
